CTNDM INTRODUCES ITSELF AT INC3 (UNEP, Nairobi, 31 October – 4 November 2011)

Spain joined the Global Mercury Partnership (GMP) last September in the area of "Mercury Supply and Storage" following a communication from the Secretary of State on Climate Change.

The GMP is part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and is recognised as one of the leading mechanisms for the execution of immediate actions within the Global Mercury Treaty negotiations taking place in UNEP, which are expected to end and be signed by 2013.

The GMP met in Nairobi on 5 and 6 November 2011 for the 3rd session of the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC) on mercury meetings. Spain and Uruguay were selected as joint heads of the “Mercury Supply and Storage” action area.

Each GMP area has a number of goals and an action plan to guide Spain’s leadership. Spain will collaborate in the partnership mainly through the activities of the National Technological Centre for Mercury Decontamination (CTNDM).

Uruguay and Spain were accepted and warmly acknowledged for the leadership of this area and for their current works.
